The image of a shaved-bald head and a goatee is iconic now, and it's often been associated with Stone Cold Steve Austin, possibly the most popular wrestler of modern times. Certainly in the late 90's, no figure defined "bad ass" quite as well as the foul-mouthed redneck character who played by his own rules and attacked anyone who happened to be in the way.
When I get email from people who have recently shaved their heads, it's not uncommon for people to compare themselves to Stone Cold. It's not hard to understand why. Besides being a poster boy for toughness and stubborn independence, Austin looked great with his smoothly-shaved head.
Austin made it big in 1996, at a time in which shaved heads were still not that common. His charisma and visibility helped make the bald-by-choice look more popular.
